For over 30 years, the Escarpment winery has been producing excellent New Zealand wines from the Martinborough region, one of the country's most important wine-growing areas. Founded by Larry McKenna and led by winemaker Tim Bourne and viticulturist Rowan Hoskins, the estate owns approximately 24 hectares of vineyards along the banks of the Huangarua River and also sources grapes from carefully selected local growers. The Chardonnay grapes come primarily from the Te Muna estate vineyard, whose name means "secret" or "special place" in Māori, located on the Martinborough Terrace. Following the harvest, fermentation takes place in French oak. The finished wine then rests for eleven months in barrel, followed by another four months in stainless steel tanks before bottling. The result is a distinctive, complex wine that truly reflects the winery's philosophy and its terroir. In the glass, Escarpment Chardonnay reveals a broad, layered aromatic profile featuring notes of grapefruit and ripe citrus, stone fruit, and spicy touches interspersed with hints of hazelnut. On the palate, it is mineral and juicy, with a distinct, refreshing streak of acidity and a smooth texture. It is elegant and lively, with a long, thirst-quenching finish. It pairs perfectly with grilled fish, spaghetti with clams, and scallop risotto.
