Social Call

Om Social Call

Socialite Charley Weaver makes a ”social call” at the Las Brisas resort in 1972. By the late 1960s and 70s Acapulco, a sun-soaked town on the Pacific coast of Mexico, had become the fashionable vacation spot for socialites. entrepreneurs, and the Hollywood jet-set. Socialites, fashion designers, and entrepreneurs weren’t the only visitors to Mexico’s Gold Coast resort. Elvis Presley filmed Fun in Acapulco there, John F Kennedy and his bride, Jackie, honeymooned there, and Elizabeth Taylor became a regular along with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr., who frequented the El Mirador hotel. In the 1970s, the clifftop Las Brisas villas became the location for elaborate and constant-parties hosted by vacationers like the rental car king Warren Avis. With guests including everyone from fashion designer Oscar de la Renta and his French wife, Françoise de Langlade, to models like Marisa Berenson, these hedonistic parties became the perfect backdrop to the evolv- ing style of the 1970s string bikinis, headscarves, ropes of beads and baubles, and endless games of backgammon by the pool.
